Vegetation identification is a fundamental skill for ecologists, environmental practitioners, conservation managers, and natural resource specialists. It involves the recognition, classification, and interpretation of plant species and vegetation communities to better understand ecosystem composition, condition, and function. In South Africa, vegetation identification plays a critical role in meeting the requirements of environmental legislation and policies administered by organisations such as the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). The ability to accurately identify vegetation is therefore key to sound environmental decision-making, legal compliance, and the sustainable management of natural resources.
This course is designed to equip participants with practical field-based skills to identify plant species and vegetation communities, covering the following concepts:
• Introduction to basic vegetation classification
• The landscape and environmental conditions associated with different vegetation types
• How to compile a reference collection, both physically and digitally
• Introduction to the identification of common wetland plant, grasses, forbs, and trees
